Many government and aided schools in the Nilgiris lacked adequate toilets, creating a major barrier to education, particularly for adolescent girls. With support from the Government of Japan, RDO installed prefabricated toilets in remote schools, working with headmasters, parent teacher associations and local stakeholders. The intervention improved school hygiene, attendance and the learning environment.
