Year

1995

Improving green leaf quality and incomes for small tea growers through saplings, training and better field practices.

RDO supported small tea growers in the Nilgiris to improve the quality of green leaf supplied to bought leaf factories. The programme raised and supplied 1.2 million clonal tea saplings, trained growers in plucking standards, pruning and manure application, and helped them access support from the Tea Board. Better leaf quality enabled farmers to secure higher prices and improve household income.

6,000 small tea growers trained and supported, with green leaf prices increasing from around ₹3 to ₹7 per kg.
