Turning sanitation work into dignified green enterprise by supporting women workers to own and operate a compost production company.

RDO supported 40 sanitation workers to form a women led compost production company that converts organic waste into natural manure for local agriculture. The model recognises the essential role of sanitation workers, creates dignified livelihoods and supplies affordable compost to small farmers. It also links waste management with low carbon farming and circular economy outcomes in the Nilgiris.

Key Outcomes

The company produces around 2 tonnes of natural compost per day and provides women directors with monthly income of approximately ₹15,000 each.

Beneficiaries

40 women directly; 200 transport workers and 5,000 small farmers indirectly
